Jakarta's 'Zombie' Train Confronts Traffic Apocalypse

Asean News Headlines at 9pm on Friday (Sept 9, 2022) | The Star

In a city known for its terrible traffic, the "zombies" have arisen with a chilling proposition to force more people to use public transport.

It's the hope of Jakarta's Light Rapid Transit Operator, who transformed a train and station into a bloody zombie apocalypse scene, with real passengers invited to the show.

The paid ride, launched last month by light rail operator PT LRT Jakarta and organizer of the Pandora Box event, aims to promote the relatively new system and encourage young people to use public transport more widely.

The gargled and roared actors wore torn clothes. One particularly creepy character only shows the whites of his eyes.

The zombies drag their legs towards the passengers and make them run through the dark tunnels of the station to catch the train.

In the bloody train, a television presenter - another actor - reports on the fictional Pandora virus that is spreading through the city and turning people into the living dead.

Soldiers armed with fake guns fight the "zombies" and try to rescue the passengers.

But the reanimated corpses lurk, hide, ready to emerge and terrorize.

"Beware of zombies" warns a sign at the station with flashing red hazard lights.

"The zombies weren't really chasing us, but we're still freaking out," a 17-year-old zombie enthusiast told Genesis Christie.

The event, titled Doomsday Train, was inspired by the 2016 South Korean horror film Busan Train.

"We want to teach young people that using public transport can be a good thing," Pandora Box CEO Billy Junior told AFP.

Heavily polluted Jakarta, home to more than 30 million people, has one of the worst traffic jams in the world and its uneven sidewalks are not conducive to walking.

The light rapid transit system only started commercial activity in December 2019.

Traffic analysts at the time warned that the new line and cheap fares alone would not be enough to cure the city's private car craze.

A ride on the "Apocalypse Train" costs between 60,000 and 70,000 rupees (4 to 4.70 US dollars) until the end of the Sunday event.

Organizers have promised that the 20-minute journey will not interrupt regular LRT commuters. Even without participating, they can watch a horror show for free.
