What To Know About Warped Wood

A few months ago I bought a pile of wood to make patio furniture. Now that you're ready to tackle the project, you may find that some of the lumber you bought and stored in the garage is warped.

What causes wood decay?

Wood heats up when the moisture content of the wood changes irregularly. Think of it this way: You have 2 x 4 moisture. When drying, one part of the board dries faster than the other, the driest area shrinks faster. This puts stress on the wood and it can bend or warp.

Factors that contribute to wood damage

Some types of wood have a relatively high moisture content, while other types of wood have a very low moisture content. The expansion and subsequent contraction of wood is due to the moisture of the wood and the amount of moisture in the air. With an increase in humidity, the moisture of the wood increases and the wood expands. As humidity decreases, moisture content decreases and wood shrinks. This is called equilibrium moisture or EMC.

In addition to the wood's size, grain can affect its electromagnetic compatibility. Thick wood takes longer to absorb and lose moisture. The sawn lumber is reduced by a quarter and then the quarter sawn lumber is expanded by half.

Try these simple ways to prevent wood splitting.

Various types of wood and their degradation

Some types of wood are smaller than others. Rice is a very dense variety, which means it is prone to cracking and chipping. Spruce is considered mature when it reaches MCC, so it should not be damaged excessively. Redwood contains a natural chemical that prevents excess moisture.

How to remove bent wood

Avoid wood condensation by storing the wood in a well-ventilated area. The wood should be stacked flat and kept in a cool, shaded and dry place.
