Harbor Freight Tools Just Recalled Miter Saw Blade Guards—Heres What We Know

Powerful woodworking tools like miter saws are great for getting a large amount of work done quickly, but dramatically increasing productivity increases risk. You're unlikely to lose a finger while cutting wood with a hand saw, but when using a chainsaw, the possibility is very real. Therefore, it is essential to learn the basics of the English language.

That's why device manufacturers have focused on design innovation over the years to improve safety. These innovations in details like blades and blade guards make it much easier to use woodworking tools safely, assuming the manufacturer has done their homework. The problem is that sometimes security innovations are unreliable. When this happens, the responsible tool manufacturers recall the defective products, rework the parts if necessary, and then offer a new version to customers free of charge. Harbor Freight Tools recently made a 12-inch chainsaw in Chicago with a specific part.

On February 23, 2023, Harbor Freight Tools officially recalled 7,175 lower blade guards from its Chicago Electric 12" miter saw. Made of light gray plastic, the blade guards have no model or serial number, but in a gray area it says ""Chicago is stamped with the words "Electric".

According to the manufacturer, they have received a report that this protective cover has broken during use. Additionally, the guards do not completely cover the saw blade, putting the user at risk for serious injury. No one has been hurt so far, but the blade guard has proven to be unreliable.

How do I know if my Blade Guard has been recalled?

According to Harbor Freight Tools, the recall involves guards purchased for the Chicago Electric miter saw with part number 61970 and serial number 370331931.

Check these numbers at the bottom of the saw's care label. If you have a Chicago Electric blade guard that you believe may be included, check the date of purchase. Only protective covers purchased between August 2019 and September 2022 are being recalled.

What should I do if the blade guard comes off?

If you find that you have a saw that is affected by this recall, the first and most important step is to stop using the saw immediately. Even if you're in the middle of a project and need to make more cuts, the risk outweighs any reward.

According to Harbor Freight Tools, any customer who purchases a recalled protective case will be contacted directly and will receive a new protective case free of charge. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Harbor Freight Tool directly at (800)-444-3353 or email feedback@harborfreight.com.
