The 7,800-square-foot space in the Promenade shopping center housed home and garden retailer Plow and Stove for many years.

The Rockler Company sells woodworking tools and accessories. Short pump shops SawStop, Jet, Powermatic, Festool and more. carries the goods. Woodworking courses are also held at the company's shop.

Rockler CEO Steve Singer said Fairfax targeted the Richmond area shortly after the company opened its first store in Virginia last summer and was well received. The Richmond area is a hot spot for Rockler's online sales, he said, and the company believes there is a lot of local interest in the lumber business.

"We immediately looked for another great location [in Virginia], and Richmond came up," Singer said. "Richmond has a wonderful carpenter community. The demographics and vibrancy of the area is great."

Singer said in an interview Tuesday that the store is expected to open in the next few days.

He said the company will open more stores in Virginia, but has no specific plans to do so.

Rockler is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The company has about 50 stores in about 25 states.

It's unclear when Plow & Hearth Brands, owned by local Evergreen Enterprises, closed its Short Pump store. Evergreen CEO John Toler was unavailable for comment this week.
