What are the best digital meters?
In this article:
When it comes to woodworking or any other type of construction, the golden rule is "measure seven times, cut once." The opposite of the fool's rule is "measure once, cut twice." When you sit down to measure, it should be as accurate as possible, because the smallest mistake can cost you. A common tool, the tape measure, is suitable for measuring large numbers. However, to accurately measure the minimum size, you need a scale. It's best to use digital calipers because they do the hard work of converting for you.
The size and scope of the application
Digital calipers are designed to measure distances up to a thousandth of an inch, so they are usually smaller in size. A standard digital sensor can only measure up to 6 inches. However, larger sizes are available if desired. They generally come in 2-inch increments, and very few are larger than 12 inches. Although it is rare or impossible to find smaller than 4 inches, you can find smaller ones.
Measurement type
The two main measurement systems in the world are imperial, which is used in the United States, and metric, which is used by almost everyone. Inexpensive digital gauges use one system or another, so make sure you order the right type before you buy. The top end can switch between the two systems at the touch of a button, which is a godsend if your job requires both. But, if you only want one, save the money.
Material
Most digital calipers are made of plastic or stainless steel.
- Plastic gauges are much cheaper than stainless steel, making them a good choice for those who only need one for the occasional side project. However, it's a poor choice for professionals as the plastic can bend or warp over time, causing measurement errors that can ruin your project.
- Stainless steels are very expensive, but their high strength and rigidity cannot cause inaccurate measurements due to damage. However, the best stainless steel hummingbirds can cost up to three figures, making them an investment only for serious hobbyists.
Bonus features
Some digital wallets offer additional bonuses, even if they are small, but they can be important when making a purchase decision.
- Dust and waterproof. The amount of dust you encounter when working with wood can easily seep into the parts of your digital caliper and cause damage. Meanwhile, the water is only too happy to destroy them. Check the ingress protection rating to make sure your caliper can withstand this type of exposure. Protection level IP consists of two numbers: the first indicates dust on a scale of one to six, and the second indicates water on a scale of one to eight.
- No magnets. Sometimes wood and electronics go together. If your project uses electronics, get foam board without magnets, or you can fry sensitive parts.
- Difference Measurement: Often you need to measure the difference between two or more things. Digital meters for differential measurements can easily do this because they can zero element one before measuring element two. Otherwise, measure both separately and pull out the calculator.
- Battery: Like all digital, digital calipers require a battery to operate. Most include one, but double check to make sure. Others include an extra one or two. Also, check user reviews to see how long the Caliber battery lasts, and see if the new Caliber has battery-saving features like automatic shutdown.
Price
Although digital calipers are only suitable for basic, occasional projects, they can be found for $25 or less. The best ones with many features can cost up to $100. For serious woodworkers, the best calipers with high-tech features are only $100.
