Carving Out A New Career

Carving Out A New Career

A long drive leads to the Hitching Post logging site.

Lake Lucerne – Laura Pavelko has carried out many tasks in her life; Hairdressers, executive secretaries, even journalists, but one passion has always remained: carpentry.

"I was the one who would go into my dad's cabin and get things done," he told The Post-Star on Saturday.

Pavelko was born in Hudson but moved to New Jersey to live with another family after the death of his parents when he was very young.

"I first visited the Adirondacks in 1972 when I was 12 and I said, 'This is where I belong,'" he recalls.

While he is doing this, life takes a different path for Pavel; Get married, raise a family, and work to support that family. But when it came time for her and her husband John to start planning the next chapter of their life together, they knew exactly where to look.

"In 2004 I said to John, let's go to a property in the Adirondacks near Lake George," he says.

Pavels' team discovered a farm on Lake Lucerne. They used the place as a summer residence for the first five years, but Laura Pavel finally moved out in 2009 while John stayed in New Jersey to attend to family matters.

As he made the transition permanent, Pavelko found it harder than expected to find a stable career.

"He didn't think a 30-year resume was as attractive as a four-year degree," he says.

Pavelko spent the next twelve years doing seasonal, part-time, and whatever temporary jobs he could find. John manages to reunite with her and the two adjust to their new life. Until Pavelko saw the passenger mail open its door.

"I noticed they opened this cheese shop," he said. And I said, "I could sell cheese!" So I walked over and said, "Need help?"

This optional investigation sparked a two-year partnership that shows no signs of slowing down.

"Since then, in the last few years, I've been assigned a lot of work there... I organize my working hours myself, I work at my own pace. I'm very independent,” says Pavelko.

If you log on to Hitching Post today, you'll be hard pressed to find anything Pavelko doesn't make.

From restoring old furniture to making tables and drilling holes in walls, Pavelko was the woman behind Hitching Post.

Since 2021, help transform an old community center into a roadside landmark for locals and tourists. Pavelko says he specializes in creating functional artworks that blend seamlessly with historical buildings.

"The building should look like it's been here since 1939," he said. "He wants it to look like he's always been here."

Since Pavelko had his sights set on the Adirondacks in 1972, he's come full circle and secured a spot at one of the area's most iconic spots.
