The Chery Omuda 5 EV will be assembled in Indonesia in 2024 - and will also be launched in Malaysia next year as a CBU.

Recently, Chery unveiled two SUVs recently launched in Malaysia at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Motor Show (GIAS): the Omuda 5 and the Tiggo 8 Pro, the latter being an older version. On the main stage is the Omoda 5 EV, which is open to order.

Chery Indonesia has accumulated 100 orders for the Omoda 5 EV during the 11-day GIIAS and continues to get names on the books for IDR 10 million (RM 3,046). Company President Shaun Shu - President of Chery Malaysia and Vice President of Chery International - told local media that the Omoda 5 EV will be assembled in the country early next year.

By the way, Malaysia will get the Omoda 5 EV next year. In fact, Chery is very optimistic and the Wuhu-based automaker is targeting a 20% market share in our EV segment. We understand that the Omoda 5 EV will be imported into Malaysia as a CBU and will take advantage of the tax-free incentives for imported EVs from Malaysia. This is in contrast to the local CKD assembly line for the Omoda 5 internal combustion engine.

The Omoda 5 EV at GIIAS is basically the same car we first showed at Auto Shanghai 2023 in April, right down to the blue/wood interior, which I love. However, there is one important difference: the Shanghai show car is a left-hand drive model, while the GIAS cars are right-hand drive, meaning that work on the LHD to RHD conversion has been completed. Before the sale. In Indonesia and Malaysia.

Otherwise, only the front crane is different. It is now Cherry instead of Omoda as the Omoda sub-brand is based in China while the main Cherry brand is starting to re-establish itself in ASEAN. Even the rear is covered in stock-car-style badging: the deck features cherry red taillights, Omoda 5, and the all-important EV badging.

The Omoda 5 EV has a 221 hp (165 kW) motor with a footprint of 61 kW/h. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 7.8 seconds and the Chery produces 15 kW per 100 km/h. With DC fast charging, the Cherry needs 35 minutes to go from 0 to 80% charge. The stated range is 450 km when fully charged. However, keep in mind that Chinese car manufacturers often use the domestic CLTC, which usually gives a higher value than the NEDC, the actual WLTP.

Compared to the ICE Omoda 5, this EV has a completely different face. Gone is the debris that reflected love or hate, and now there is a clean, normal nose that doesn't need cooling. There is no logo on the nose above the trunk lid, as Chery says. There are also aero wheels available in two colors.

Inside, both the GIAS and Shanghai showcars feature striking color schemes, with blue as the main color contrasted with yellow stitching and light wood paneling - very refreshing. The steering wheel bears the Omoda logo, while the modern combination screen on the dashboard and the corner slot for the phone are retained. Internal combustion engine shift lever removed.

The Omoda 5 EV will be available in Malaysia next year. What do you think of the clean look of the electric version with the ICE complex and its technical details?
