How to sharpen a wooden blade
The best wood blades are those that are sharp enough to do the job accurately and efficiently, so it is important to sharpen your blade regularly to keep it sharp. This process may take a while at first, but with a little practice and a refinement guide, you'll be able to complete the process quickly.
Create a sharp surface by acquiring a glass shelf (a very smooth surface is important here) and spray a sheet of 80-grit sandpaper with spray adhesive. Set the sanding guide to the desired angle and run the blade over the paper. It's sharp
Eventually, a "wire edge" or dent will begin to form, indicating that the bend has reached the point. Remove the 80-grit sheet and fit the 220-grit sheet, turning the blade and running it over the paper a few times to remove the wire edge. Repeat the process with 150 sheets of paper. If your cup is big enough, you can glue three sheets together and not worry about changing them.
How to use wooden brackets
Despite the simple design, the blade takes some technique to use properly.
If you are making a shallow groove to make a hole for the back plate, first mark the cut edges with a utility knife. Then orient the blade vertically, with the blunt side toward the cut, and tap with a hammer to cut the fiber along that edge. Turn the blunt end down so the tip is at a slight angle to the wood and start hammering the tip to remove fine chips.
As you peel thin strips of wood to line up the holes on the exposed side, keep the bevel flat against the wood. You should be able to use your strength to make this cut without a hammer.
For heavy cuts, to remove large pieces of wood, hold the back of the blade against the cutting edge and cut vertically with a hammer to apply the necessary force. If you are making a long joint, use a saw to cut both ends to the proper depth, then make alternate cuts to remove the remaining wood.
