If you want a machine that can handle tough conditions and tackle complex projects, then choose the most powerful machine you can afford. If you're primarily working with softwoods that don't stress the planers too much, a low power motor will do.

Planner Makita KP0800K
This hand planer provides the reliable quality you expect from the Makita brand. It can smooth up to 3¼ inch wide and 3⁄32 inch deep in one go. It is ideal for fine woodwork and small, intricate work, but can also be used for general carpentry and general DIY work.

Adjustable universal table planer
If you don't need power tool performance, consider this portable stationary tablet. It's much cheaper, and since you're on your own, you have complete control over what's going on, unlike a machine that can make mistakes before it reacts. Ergonomic handles and grips also provide a firm, secure grip while working, and the cast iron body is tough enough to withstand normal wear and tear.
This is a great option for novice carpenters who use it to get a better "feel" of how their tool actually works.
2.2 inch 12 volt manual wood planer
I've always been impressed by the build quality and durability of Bosch power tools, and this battery-powered wood floor is a great example of that. The compact size and relatively narrow cutting head make this model ideal for small, precise jobs that larger machines cannot handle. Brushless motors increase efficiency, which is always important with cordless tools. I also appreciate the fact that the machine can control which side of the kindling to burn the chips on. However, you will have to purchase the battery separately, so be sure to include it in your total charge.
