Genesis: Pathways To Success Announced DIY Woodworking Camp

Ironwood will help Osgood's camp.

(Ripley County, Indiana) - Genesis: Pathways to Success kicks off its first week of summer programs as well as the Summer of Stream (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math) initiative at Iron Timbers in Osgood. Indiana. . A total of 10 students from across Southeast Indiana learned the art of carpentry on June 1 and 2 at the DIY Carpentry Camp.

Students were given the opportunity to design their own sausage or cutting board with the help of Iron Timber staff and create their own boards. From sanding to resin application, students take a complete crash course that introduces them to the basics of woodworking and creating the finished product. Students will gain basic skills in safety when working with wood, the correct use of tools, the importance of wood, and the use of mathematical concepts including angles and measurements to ensure accuracy. In addition, students learned about metal products and how they can be embedded in wood in a variety of ways, such as carving your name on a CNC machine.

“My favorite part of the DIY woodworking camp was making sausages or a cutting board and customizing the metal frame to your liking,” said Gracen Bouchorn, a 7th grade student from Milan and one of the camp participants. Projects created by students were taken home as the main materials.

In addition to the many STOOM concepts introduced, many interpersonal skills were also taught during the camp. These include creativity, problem solving, time management, and adaptability, among others. These and many other skills will help students succeed in their future endeavors.

"We enjoy working with all ages, especially children. We are a family business and we hope to continue to be so in the future," said Dustin Payne, owner of Iron Timbers.

Genesis: Pathways to Success would like to thank Iron Timbers for doing a great DIY woodworking camp and providing students with an opportunity for experiential learning related to woodworking. We look forward to cooperating with them again in the near future.
