This fall, carpenters from New England (and beyond) are invited to participate in New England's first annual woodworking competition, being held in Concord. The New Hampshire Joiners' Consortium hosts events at the McAuliff-Shepard Discovery Center and Planetarium. According to Elliott Sawicki, organizer of the October event, it's all about good craftsmanship. The Portsmouth-based champion spoke to podcast producer Roger Wood about planning what will hopefully be an annual event.
Eliot Savitsky
Unlike many of my colleagues in my current company, I never wanted to do market research. From a young age, I dreamed of being a train driver, a Zamboni rider, or the guy at the amusement park who ran the rides. I majored in chemistry, but soon realized I didn't want to be a chemist. So I went to business school, where it turned out my goal was to be a CPG brand manager, or crazy on Madison Avenue, big spend and three martinis.
Honestly, they should pour me a bucket if I down three martinis. Needless to say, I got a job at General Foods, where I learned how to do market research from the brightest people in the business. This led to a job at Pepsi-Cola at the end of the Pepsi Challenge era and during the Michael Jackson years. I transitioned to the agency side as I moved from small business partnerships to ever larger global networks. I am happy to be back in a more manageable company full of extremely talented professionals.
Over the years I have probably worked in almost every industry, supporting both local and global clients, with particular expertise in pharma/biotechnology, consumer health, financial services, consumer products and BTB. I help clients solve their problems using the technologies behind retail, branding, communications, mapping and personalized experiences. I am a lifelong learner with a wide range of interests such as learning rock climbing, 2nd degree black belt in taekwondo, working as a bartender, learning to cook and teaching professional cooking and more recently working as a carpenter.
Also, I drove an Indy car averaging 192.6 mph and traveled around Nepal for three weeks to see Everest in 2019. This might explain why I was having trouble concentrating on Zoom calls.
