The Brakes for Breasts campaign encourages free auto repair shops to donate brake supplies during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Customers pay for labor and other necessary parts, and the store donates 10% of profits to the Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Fund . This campaign comes to Pro Automotive Services in Wood River.

“My mother died of breast cancer. She was in remission for 32 years and then the cancer came back,” said owner Jennifer Baggett. “She tested triple negative for breast cancer and [Target] vaccines are being developed right now. “Once this cancer mystery is solved, all types of breast cancer and other types of ovarian cancer. It will be easier to find types.”

Baggett co-owns Pro Automotive Services with her husband and serves as operations manager. Baggett hopes the company will be able to donate $2,000 by the end of the month. This is her second time participating in the Brax for Breasts program, which has raised more than $1.6 million since its launch in 2011.

“They hope to raise $200,000 this year,” Baggett said. “And you can imagine how many independent repair shops there are around the country, but few participate. By 2022, only 106 independent auto repair shops will participate and we will donate $200,000.

Doctors who began developing a vaccine for breast cancer say their work would not be complete without breast-to-breast snuggling. The vaccine has been undergoing human trials since October 2023.

"It gives us a lot of hope because our family history [of breast cancer] is very strong," Baggett said. “I have a daughter and a niece. This gives us hope that a vaccine will be available before any of us are diagnosed.

Arlene Hall, mother of Jennifer Baggett It was bittersweet in many ways; His mother, Arlene Hall, would have been a good candidate for human trials if the study had progressed before the cancer returned.

Donations support that research, Baggett said. We hope people will take advantage of the Brakes to Boot promotion to have their brakes and brake pads checked at Pro Automotive Service at 1095 E. Edwardsville Road in Wood River in October. But if you don't need brake pads or want to go to another repair shop, you can donate them to Pro Automotive Service or the official Brakes for Breast website .

In addition to raising money, Baggett also wants to raise awareness. Urges citizens to undergo screening for early detection of breast cancer. Her mother, Baggett, participated in Relay for Life and Brakes for the Chest to give her the opportunity to honor her mother and continue the fight.

“I think I'm trying to help, the next person doesn't have to...” Baggett paused and then added, “For future generations, if we don't take action and do community service to raise awareness, I will...” I just think that this is correct. Hear."
