Learn How To Make Wood Duck Boxes At The TECHE Project Workshop

Wood ducks can be found on Louisiana waterways in winter and spring; However, they were not always so common. According to the TECHE project, mallard populations were threatened in the early 20th century due to overhunting and habitat loss. The use of artificial nest boxes in the 1940s allowed wood duck populations to revive. The best part of this success story is that everyone can help carry on Wood Duck's legacy. It's not that difficult to raise wood ducks yourself. All they need is water and a suitable nest cover and nest box nearby. If you want to learn how to raise wood ducks and help keep wood duck populations healthy on Louisiana waterways, attend Project TECHE's annual wood duck management workshop.

This year's workshop will be held on Saturday, January 20th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Saint-Martinville Acadian Memorial and Museum (121 S. New Market Street). The workshop is here just in time for your wooden duck boxes for the spring nesting season. In the workshop, participants will learn about the general ecology of wood ducks; What to do and what to expect when raising ducks in a nest box And how to set up a camera to take pictures of the ducks in the box and when they fly on "leaping day". Wooden duck boxes are also available for purchase.

Patty Holland, TECHE Project Executive Director, says this workshop is a great opportunity for Acadiana residents to help improve wood duck populations while enjoying watching these amazing birds raise their young. »

Intended for Bayou Teche landowners, but anyone interested in raising wood ducks will benefit from this workshop. If you are a member of the TECHE project, the participation fee is free; Others require a small fee of $10, which you can apply for an annual membership to the TECHE Project. While at Bayou Teche, you can join a group of over 60 participants from Mile 1 to 132 who are doing their part to increase the number of wood ducks. According to the TECHE Project, more than 350 wood ducks were produced in the bay last year alone. Project TECHE's Wood Duck Program participants also receive a free Bayou Teche Paddle Trail sign in their wood duck box that shows the miles located in the bayou.
