The Wood County Committee on Aging will host a “Woodworking Philosophy Discussion: History, Traditions, Techniques and Life Lessons” on Tuesdays, February 6 through March 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Wood County Senior Center. , 140 S. Grove St. Bowling Green. All ages are welcome, no woodworking experience required. All classes will be of a discussion nature and will be devoted to the art of woodworking. This class will be taught by Mike Shetzer. Sessions will include:
Session 1: Why woodworking?
Why we love trees and their wood. Carpenters also get a satisfaction and challenge from their craft that other hobbies don't offer. Is woodworking an activity, a craft or an art?
Session 2: Make the cut
How dull the boards become. Differences between planer, quarter and rip saws. Different types of trees and why certain types of wood are chosen for certain purposes.
Session 3: Natural Truth
History and traditions of forests, passages and metal fields. We will review and discuss the forming, benching, threshing, plowing, felling and filling areas, their purpose, parts and uses.
Session 4: What we want to see
How to choose a quality board and identify possible defects such as knots, shrinkage, vibration, splits, splits and others. Which ones should you avoid and which ones can add character to your project. Types of fatigue, their causes and ways to overcome them.
Lesson 5: Swinging Tools
A humorous discussion of humanity's first tool for creating culture. Plus a discussion of nails, their history and interesting facts about them.
Session 6: Perfect Fit
Nothing beats the creative genius of a carpenter joining two boards into one. We will show you the different types of joinery, their advantages and disadvantages.
